How to Make Compost and Liquid Fertilizer at Home

Introduction
in this article, I’m going to show you How to Make Compost and Liquid Fertilizer at Home. Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed in a process called Composting. Composting is a biological decomposition of organic waste such as food or Plant material by Bacteria, Fungi, Worms and other organisms under controlled aerobic condition. Composting with Worms also known as Vermiculture results in nutrient-loaded worm castings.
There are different type of Compost making.
They are,
- Heap method
- Barrel Method
- Pit Method
Heap Compost Method
We are used to heap method for making the compost it is a very easy and simple method. this method can be used to prepare good characteristic compost. the composting process is a complete interaction between waste and the microorganisms within the waste.
Tools and equipment’s
- Black Polythene
- Cow dung
- Gliricidia
- Epil Epil
- Banana stem and Banana Leaves
- Top Soil
Method
- First, we selected the Suitable land
- Then cleaned the land and remove weeds
- Next we supplied materials for made compost
- We made area about 3m length and 1m width
- We cut small species of all materials
- After apply weed thrash layer to the bottom
- Apply Cowdung layer
- Gliricidia, Banana leaves and Stems, Epil Epil layers continuously applied (2-3 layers)
- Apply Water
- Cover the Heap by used with topsoil
- Finally covered with polythene and finished to the made compost

Making Vermicompost

Vermicomposting uses worms to do the work just need to bury food waste under moistened material. Vermicomposting is the usage of earthworms to convert vegetable waste to 100% natural plant Fertilizer.
Materials
Brick, Cowdung, discarded vegetable parts, leaves, Grass, Red Earth Worms
Method
- First we prepare tank (Height 2 feet, Width 3, length 6)
- Lay the bricks layer at the bottom
- After that add the soil layer
- Again add the soil layer
- then add earthworms to the media
- after add grass layer and wastage vegetable part layers
- finally add water to the tank
- after 2 months decay the components and make compost
- then tank is divided into 2 parts and collect in one side
- keep 2 weeks to drying the compost mixture
- after that watering the other side and collect earthworms.

Identification of Physical Characteristics
Colour
Shall be Brown Gray or Dark Black
Odour
Free from unpleasant odour
Texture
Texture shall be friable when moist
Moisture Content
The material shall not contain more than 10 per cent sand
Foreign Materials
Free from visible non-biodegradable material except sand
Chemical Characteristics
- Total N content per cent by dry mass min – 0.1
- Total P content per cent by dry mass min – 0.5
- Total Potassium content per cent by dry mass min – 0.5
- Calcium content per cent by dry mass min – 0.7
- C: N Ratio 10:25
- Organic matter per cent by dry mass min
Preparation of Organic Liquid Fertilizer/Wormy Wash
Tools and Equipment’s
- Barrel
- Red Earth Worms
- Water
- Soil
- Clay Pot
- Fabrics
Method
- Take the barrel and put it into a suitable place
- Then put the soil to the barrel
- Next put red earthworms on the soil mixture
- Fill a clay pot or bottle with water
- Then put some clothes to the bottle and make them to prepare water drips
- Then bottle is put up to the barrel
Wormy Wash is a collection of excretory products and mucus secretion of earthworms only with micronutrients from the soil organic molecules. Wormy wash is collected properly is a clean and transparent pale yellow coloured fluid

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Compost
Advantages
- Sustainable and Environmentally friendly
- Reduce fertilizers and pesticides
- Plant damage threat avoided
- Helping retain moisture and suppress plant diseases and pests
- Enriches Soil
- Lower Cost
Disadvantages
- Not all products are created equally
- Nutrient levels are low
- Farmers are don’t like this method
